Søren Rosenlund’s
Sybrianus, P. P. P.
The Earliest Printed Scandinavian book of spells
Rendered & Discussed by
Andreas Oxnæs Damgaard
“Take nine kinds of wood & nine kinds of herbs…”
Authored by Danish occultist Søren Rosenlund under the pen name Junior Philopatreias, Sybrianus P. P. P. is the earliest book of spells, a grimoire, printed in all of Scandinavia (1771). Here Danish philologist Andreas Oxnæs Damgaard provides the first full rendering of the text into English alongside its original Danish and accompanies both with discussion of the text’s unique features, such as Rosenlund’s use of runes (the region’s native alphabet) and references to Old Norse mythology. Quietly influential in its time but extremely obscure today, this artfully-presented edition is an important contribution to the study of the history of Scandinavian occultism.
